Proven Treatments for Gum Disease

Periodontal diseases take on many different forms but are usually a result of a coalescence of bacterial plaque biofilm accumulation of the red complex bacteria (e.g., P. gingivalis, T. forsythia, and T. denticola) of the gingiva and teeth, combined with host immuno-inflammatory mechanisms and other risk factors which lead to destruction of the supporting bone around natural teeth. Untreated, these diseases lead to alveolar bone loss and tooth loss and, to date, continue to be the leading cause of tooth loss in adults.

Scaling and root planing, otherwise known as conventional periodontal therapy, non-surgical periodontal therapy, or deep cleaning, is the process of removing or eliminating the etiologic agents – dental plaque, its products, and calculus – which cause inflammation,[1] thus helping to establish a periodontium that is free of disease.

Arestin makes scaling and root planning more effective than scaling alone.

Confront your peridontal (gum) disease with an antibiotic
If you have gum disease, SRP is needed to help improve the health of your teeth and gums. Bacteria are the cause of gum disease. That’s why your dental professional may recommend ARESTIN® (minocycline HCl) Microspheres, 1 mg. It is an antibiotic that helps kill bacteria at the root of the problem. Take your dental professional’s advice—choose ARESTIN®.

Your dentist places ARESTIN® in the pockets above and below your gumline. This may happen at the time of SRP or at a follow-up visit. You may also receive ARESTIN® during routine periodontal maintenance.
Your dentist will place these microspheres into infected areas after completing SRP. ARESTIN® will dissolve on its own, so no removal is required.
ARESTIN® is different from an antibiotic you take as a pill. ARESTIN® is placed right where you need it, delivering the antibiotic directly to your gums.

Microspheres release antibiotics over time
ARESTIN® contains microspheres—tiny particles—that are smaller than grains of sand and are not visible to the eye. The microspheres are filled with the antibiotic minocycline hydrochloride. These microspheres release the antibiotic over time, killing bacteria so your gums can heal better than with SRP alone.

If your gums are swollen or tender, or if you experience bleeding when you brush or floss, you may have a condition known as gingivitis. If you experience more severe symptoms such as loose teeth, persistent bad breath, your gums pulling away from your teeth, or pus coming from your gums, you may have periodontitis.

Gingivitis and periodontitis are types of gum disease that you can have treated at Everest Dental LLC. Careful professional treatment can prevent further damage to your teeth and gums. If the damage is already severe, oral surgery, implants or dentures may be necessary to treat afflicted teeth.
